Garnett Evins

Frankfort- Services for Garnett Evins, 85, will be held at Harrod Brothers Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at 1:00 pm. Burial will immediately follow at Frankfort Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Garnett was a 1945 graduate of Elkhorn High School and received a paralegal degree from Midway College in 1977. She served many successful years for the Commonwealth of Kentucky and was recognized on several occasions for her services under the Executive and Legislative Branches. She served in the Executive offices of several governors and senators and was executive assistant to Deputy Commissioner Edith Schwab in the Legislative Research Commission at the time of her retirement. Mrs. Evins was a member of the Elkhorn High School Graduate Association, the Democratic Women's Club, the Women's Auxiliary of the VFW, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Elks Club. She was also a Kentucky Colonel. She is survived by her six children Mary Melinda "Missy" Evins-Poindexter (Steve), John William "Chip" Evins III (Tammy), Evin Ward Christopher "Beau" Evins, Gregory Garnett "Buzz" Evins, Jason Swingo Evins (Danielle), and Patti Kirk; 15 grandchildren Elizabeth Margaret Poindexter, Pamela Mary Garnett Poindexter, Victoria Leigh-Anna Poindexter, Mary Whitney Evins, Sara Taylor Montgomery Evins, Ashlie Malcom, Evin Ward Evins II, Mason Carter Evins, John Williams Evins IV, Lukas Brooks Evins, Hailey Elizabeth Evins, Dylan Swingo Evins, Nicholas John Caldwell, Melinda Kirk Jackson, Ashley Morgan "Casey" Kirk, and Kathrynn Lorraine Kirk; two great grandchildren Shelby Hodge and Kash Stanley; and a sister, Betty Brooks. In addition to her parents, Garnett was preceded in death by her husband, John Williams Evins Jr. Garnett was a loving woman who never turned anyone away from her home. Known, even to this day, by friends of the family as "Mama Garnett". She was truly a friend and "mother" to all who knew her. She was one in a million who was loved by many. Pallbearers are Chip Evins, Beau Evins, Buzz Evins, Swingo Evins, Bob Yeager, Grant Smith, Curtis Kirk, and Alan Boone. Honorary pallbearers will be her daughter, Missy Evins-Poindexter and her life-long friend, Leona Owens.
