John W. Updike

Frankfort " John W. Updike Jr., 76 years, of Frankfort passed away Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at Frankfort Regional Medical Center. Services for Mr. Updike will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Harrod Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Tom Troth and Rev. Vernon Carpenter will officiate. Burial will follow in Frankfort Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 a.m. until the service at the funeral home. A native of Franklin County, he was born February 3, 1934. Mr. Updike was a member of the National Guard Reserves and retired after 41 years. He retired from Bell South-AT&T with 31 years of service and Department of Military Affairs after 12 years. He also worked during the General Assembly sessions. Mr. Updike was a former City Commissioner and served three terms from 1988 until 1993 and was a former member of the Frankfort-Franklin County Board of Zoning Adjustments for 12 years. He was a longtime member of the Frankfort Optimist Club. He was a 46 year member of Hillcrest Baptist Church where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher. Mr. Updike is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Dell Benassi Updike; children, Dianna G. Rogers, Frankfort, Donna U. Kikel (Jeff), Akron, OH, David W. Updike (Marta), Versailles, Dawson E. Updike (Vicki), Brentwood, TN; grandchildren, Jennifer G. Rogers, Jeffrey Kikel, Elizabeth Kikel, Dawson C. Updike and Cooper Mathison; sisters, Mary Edna Gaines, Frankfort and Stella Grimes (Paul), Frankfort. He was the son of the late John William Updike Sr. and Winnie Lee Stacy Updike and was preceded in death by his brother, Charles F. Updike and a grandson, Linden S. Rogers. Bearers are James C. Rogers, Jimmy Smith, Chester Hillard, Martin Harp, Larry Barker, Ken Thompson and Bill Hill. Honorary bearers are Bob and Louise Roach, Ann and Hershell Carey, Irvine and Priscilla Gershman, Pat Stewart, Anna and Steve Saylor, Glenna Standifer, Skip Hockensmith, Gippy Graham, Dennis Minks, Bonnie and Johnny Lefler, Jan Harp, his grandchildren and members of the Hillcrest Baptist Church Men�s Adult Sunday school class. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory are suggested to Franklin County Senior Citizens, 202 Medical Heights Dr., Frankfort, KY 40601 or Hospice of the Bluegrass, 208 Steele Street, Frankfort, KY 40601. He was a good man. Arrangements are under the direction of Harrod Brothers Funeral Home.
