Lois Harrod

Lois Mae Barnes Harrod, 89 of Frankfort, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at her home on June 20, 2026, following a 9-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Woodford County, Kentucky on December 19, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Bill Barnes and Georgeann Johnson Barnes. She married the love of her life, L.T. Harrod, in December of 1955. Lois retired from the Commonwealth of Kentucky as an Executive Secretary with 27 years of service. She and L.T. spent much of their retirement traveling the world. Their travels included stops in thirteen different European countries, Mexico, Hawaii, and all over the United States. For 22 years they enjoyed spending the winter months in Okeechobee and later, Sebring, Florida. No matter where she went, she never met a stranger. Lois was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and she adored her role as “Granny” to her beloved grandchildren. She was a member of Forks of Elkhorn Baptist Church and a former member of Providence Baptist Church and Crestwood Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Secretary. She loved to work with children and enjoyed teaching Sunday School and volunteering in Vacation Bible School. Throughout her life, she brightened the lives of others through her kindness, gentle spirit, and sweet smile. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by five brothers, John H. Barnes, Russell Barnes, J.T. Barnes, Hobert Barnes, and Billy Barnes, Jr.; four sisters, Sylvia Gabbard, Mary Buffin, Lucille Neal, and Agnes Douthitt; and many nieces and nephews. She is survived by her husband, L.T. Harrod; two children, David R. Harrod (Karen) and Diana Trautwein (David); two granddaughters, Lindsay Roberts (Jeremy); and Michelle Dawson (Seth); and three great-grandchildren, Adalynn Roberts, Aniston Roberts, and Brooks Dawson. She also leaves behind two sisters, Betty McDonald and Geraldine Douthitt. The family would like to say a special thank you to Lois’s long-time caregiver, Nan Conway, for the wonderful care and support she provided. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Roberts, Seth Dawson, Roy Gene Snook, Darrell Snook, Mark Watkins, Scotty Harrod, and Gary Douthitt. Services will be held at Forks of Elkhorn Baptist Church on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Todd Lester officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held at Forks of Elkhorn Baptist Church from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2026. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Fund (Sanders-Brown Center on Aging) or Bluegrass Care Navigators.
