Gene Dudley Flynn

Gene D. Flynn, of Frankfort, Kentucky, died Sept. 5, 2015 at The Residence of Alive Hospice in Nashville, Tenn. He was 84. Born on Aug. 20, 1931 to the late Walter Sanford "Pete" and Mary Lucy Housechild Flynn, he was a 1950 graduate of Frankfort High School. He attended the University of Kentucky, returning to Frankfort after the death of his father to help with the family business, Flynn Motors. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1960, he married the former Joyce Mason Young, remaining a devoted husband until her death in 2008. He joined The State Journal in 1962 as Classified Advertising Manager, a position he held for 47 years until his retirement in 1999. This position afforded him the opportunity to be in a job he loved, with people he loved, in a town he loved. Upon retirement, he continued to frequent the newspaper, and served as a seasonal doorkeeper for the Kentucky Legislative Research Committee until 2013. A kind, generous man with a heart of service, he was active in many civic and social organizations throughout his life including the Frankfort Kiwanis Club, the Capital City Shrine Club, the Oleika Temple of Lexington, and was a 65-year member of Hiram Lodge # 4 F and AM. He was a lifelong member of his beloved First Christian Church, where he served as an usher and member of The Kitchen Cabinet Class. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Betty Ann Flynn, Barbara Hope Flynn Muntz; two brothers, James Walter "Pete" Flynn and Hardin Kenneth Flynn, and loving in-laws Gilbert Johnson "Zip" Young and Georgia Riddell Young. He is survived by his daughter Martha Dudley Flynn, Nashville Tenn.; three sisters: Mary F. "Sissy" Garland (Jim), Frankfort; Patsy Sue McChesney, Frankfort; Judy Katherine Webb (Jack), Louisville. Three brothers: Norman Franklin Flynn (Barbara Anne), Nicholasville; Jerry Donald Flynn, Virginia Beach, Va; Michael Wayne Flynn, Frankfort, many nieces and nephews and three devoted and loyal friends: Hazel Arnold, Warner Caines and Missy Hammons. A blessed life filled with love, happiness and friends. Pallbearers will be Duane Hammons, George Burgess, Chuck Fletcher, Michael Pelosi, Steve Clark, Joe Sanderson, Glenn Harberson and Frank Bryant. Honorary pallbearers are Donald Bryan, Edward "Roe" Rogers, Warner Caines, Ann Dix Maenza, Lloyd Lynch, Mary Miller-Boyd and Mark Levine. Visitation will be held at First Christian Church beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 until the service at 2 p.m. Burial will follow with military honors at the Frankfort Cemetery. Masonic rites will be observed at 1:00 Saturday at the church by Hiram Lodge # 4 F and AM.
