Mason Winkler

Mason E. Winkler, age 82 of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky formerly of Frankfort, Kentucky and Moberly, Missouri passed away Saturday morning, June 19, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was born on March 20, 1928 in Moberly, Missouri the son of Ralph and Neva (Roberts) Winkler. Mason graduated from Moberly High School and attended Moberly Junior College and the University of Missouri. At age 17, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a medic in World War II and the Korean Conflict. On November 23, 1949, he married Iris Jane Slavens and last November they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Mason was employed by Uregas/Doxol Gas for over 33 years starting as a bottle gas driver and retiring as the division manager for the state of Kentucky. After retiring, he began working with Art�s Electric Company where he organized and implemented the company�s first safety program and continued to work until cancer forced him to stop in December of 2009. Mason was a former member of Jefferson Avenue United Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church in Moberly. In 1969 he became an active member of First United Methodist Church in Frankfort. He served as a member of the Administrative Board, was a former head of the Finance and Evangelism Committees, was a 5th and 6th grade Sunday School teacher for 15 years, a UMYF Coordinator for 6 years, a lay speaker, and a current member and teacher of the John Browning Sunday School Class. Gideon�s International was also an important part of Mason�s life for over 30 years. He was a former president of the Frankfort Camp, served on the Kentucky State Cabinet as Scripture Coordinator and was an active speaker in churches and at pastor rallies in Kentucky and many other states. He was also a member of the Frankfort VFW Post #4075 and a Kentucky Colonel. Mason loved golf, fishing, NASCAR (especially Jeff Gordon), playing cards, U.K. basketball and Missouri football; but most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his beloved wife Iris Jane Winkler of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky; two daughters, Ronna Woodruff and her husband Steve of Georgetown, Kentucky and Gayla Young and her husband Dan of Ross, Ohio; five grandchildren, Stephanie Woodruff Key and her husband Mike of Union, Kentucky, Charles "Chad� Mason Woodruff and his wife Hayley of Buckner, Kentucky, Joseph Young of Cincinnati, Ohio; Kyle Mason Young and his fiancé Courtney Newbauer of High Point, North Carolina; and Jennifer Young of Ross, Ohio; six great grandchildren, Riley, Bailey, and Margaret "Maggie� Key and Isabelle, Charles "Charlie,� and Henry Mason Woodruff; one nephew David Barnes; one niece Norma Barnes Halterman; and many other loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister and brother-in-law Maxine and E.S. "Bun� Barnes. There will be a visitation at Harrod Brothers Funeral Home, 312 Washington Street, Frankfort, Kentucky on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 211 Washington Street, Frankfort Kentucky. A dinner celebrating Mason�s life will be held at the church in Asbury Hall immediately following the service. On Saturday, June 26 there will be visiting hours from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Cater�s Funeral Home, 1520 South Rollins Street, Moberly, Missouri with burial and military honors following in Oakland Cemetery in Moberly.
