Merle J. Hansen

Frankfort - Merle J Hansen, 81, went to be with our Lord on Saturday, June 1, 2024. Merle was the son of Lewis Edward and Helena Ida Harms Hansen, both of whom preceded him in death. Three brothers, Lewis (Joyce), Ronald (Marlene), and Martin (Diane) and two infant sisters, Patsy Lynn and Bonnie Jean also preceded him in death. Merle married Jeanne Hilgert Hansen in October of 1964. They have four children; James (Connie), Brett, Dawn Katte, and Keri Atkinson (Kevin). Each of his children brought him special joy, many happy joyful times and he was so proud of each one. He loved them dearly. Being blessed with 10 grandchildren; H. Wesley Skotterud, Brett Oliver Hansen, Merle Hansen, Hillary Hansen Boldt, Stella Hansen Enger, Sena Atkinson Gerstmayr, Mike Hansen, Jarod Atkinson, Holly Katte, and Daisy Katte. They were a blessing to him every day. He also had 6 great-grandchildren; Lucy, Leia, Lyla, Mason, Connor, and Saint. Merle grew up in Gilman, IL his hometown which he always loved. After serving four years in the US Marine Corps from 1960-64, he returned to Illinois where he met his wife. Merle worked 26 years in the food service industry mainly for Brakebush Brothers located in Wisconsin before ending up and retiring in Kentucky. Once retired Merle found playing Tennis -earning 11 trophies through the Frankfort Park District. He absolutely loved playing golf with his friends and played right until the end. Merle felt so blessed to be a Christian, a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He had a bright smile and personality that led to many friendships. He will be missed by many. A Celebration of Life will be held at First United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Jack Brewer officiating. Visitation will be at First United Methodist Church from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. service time on Saturday. A luncheon will follow. The family requests in lieu of flowers, a donation to the American Cancer Society earmarked for prostate research or to First United Methodist Church for elder care. Arrangements are under the direction of Harrod Brothers Funeral Home & Crematory.
